Hyaluronic Acid Fillers

Injectable wrinkle fillers can give you a more youthful look for a fraction of what a traditional facelift costs. Most will fill lines and wrinkles in less than 30 minutes with results that can last from 4 months to more than a year. Wrinkle fillers can also be used as “volumizers,” plumping and lifting cheeks, jawlines, and temples; filling out thin lips, and plumping sagging hands.

Injectable wrinkle fillers, unlike Botox injections that relax the muscle under a wrinkle, fill the line, crease, or area with one of several different substances. As a result, trouble spots nearly disappear.

There are multiple types of fillers on the market with each type working a slightly different way with varying results. The most popular category of wrinkle fillers, and the one that Dr. Thomas prefers, is hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic filler substances are the safest, most natural way to add volume and rejuvenate the face.

In fact, this natural substance is found in almost every single living thing. In humans, it acts as a network that transfers essential nutrients from the bloodstream to skin cells. High concentrations are found in soft connective tissues and in the fluid surrounding your eyes. It’s also in some cartilage and joint fluids, as well as skin tissue. It is extracted and reformulated and now has become one of the most popular kinds of injectable fillers. If the term sounds familiar, it’s because the same substance is often injected into the aching joints of people with arthritis to ease pain and provide extra cushioning.

When this gel is injected, it acts like an inflated cushion to support facial structures and tissues that may have lost volume or elasticity due to normal aging. It also brings water to the surface of skin to keep it looking fresh and supple. It can be used to improve smile lines, lines around the mouth, marionette lines, as well as enhance the lips. It also erases under eye circles or hollows, giving you a fresher more youthful appearance. This natural skin substance requires no allergy testing and can last from 4-12 months. Some research shows that repeated injections may help stimulate the body’s own natural production of collagen. That will help reduce the number of lines and wrinkles. There is also some evidence that less filler is needed over time to achieve the same look.

Side effects are rare but can include redness, swelling, and bruising at the injection site. The filler may also show up under the skin as tiny bumps. This is a problem that often improves over time.

The Hyaluronic Acid wrinkle fillers Dr. Thomas uses include: Juvederm, Juvederm Ultra, Juvederm Ultra Plus, Voluma, Restylane, Restylane Silk, and Restylane Lyft.

What can I expect during a treatment session?
When you come in you’ll meet with Dr. Thomas to discuss your treatment options. Once you and he have decided which product is best to meet your goals, you will be given some ice to numb the treatment areas and a staff member will also apply some numbing cream. Our hyaluronic acid fillers are also premixed with lidocaine which will aid in making the process as comfortable as possible. You will see your results instantly, although you may also have some swelling for a few days. The swelling is usually not extreme at all. You can use makeup immediately after your treatment and get back to all your normal activities right away.
