What is Sculptra Aesthetic?
Sculptra Aesthetic works differently than Galderma’s other products and is made with a biocompatible, biodegradable, synthetic material called poly-L-lactic acid, which is gradually and naturally absorbed by the body and helps to rebuild lost collagen through a series of treatments administered by Dr. Thomas. Sculptra is best known to gradually to give you subtle results over time — without giving you away that you have had a liquid face lift! Unlike hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers, Sculptra Aesthetic helps stimulate your skin’s own natural collagen production to help restore its inner structure and increase facial volume that has been lost to aging. On average, three injection appointments are needed over a period of a few months. The number of injection appointments and the number of injections per appointment vary from person to person, depending on how much collagen has been lost.
Did you know Facial aging actually begins in your 20s? Yes it’s true- this is when skin firmness begins to decrease as a result of both internal (genetics and natural aging) and external (sun exposure, smoking, stress, etc.) factors. As you get older your body continues to slow collagen production throughout your adult life, and around age 40 most people have up to 20% collagen loss. By the time you reach your 50’s, you face up to 30% collagen loss. Sculptra® Aesthetic uses poly-L-lactic acid, which works with your body to help rebuild lost collagen for a more youthful-looking appearance that can last up to two years.

Collagen Is the Key! The not-so-secret cause of facial aging…
Yes, you may already know that collagen is a key structural component of smooth, healthy-looking skin…but what is it?
Collagen is a fibrous protein in the deep dermis that gives structure to skin and supports the functions of elastin and hyaluronic acid (HA). Elastin is an elastic protein that maintains skin shape, while HA cushions and lubricates to keep the skin hydrated. More collagen enables the presence of more elastin and HA. And as we mentioned earlier when you age, your body’s collagen production decreases and you lose about 1% of collagen per year after the age of 18. This is when many individuals start to notice the formation of wrinkles.
But what about Collagen Creams and Dietary Supplements?
Traditional collagen creams purport to deliver collagen that is absorbed by the skin. However, collagen molecules are too large to penetrate the dermis. So, in actuality, most of these treatments include vitamins and hold moisture, making them suitable moisturizers that can briefly improve skin’s appearance. Collagen dietary supplements are meant to facilitate the production of collagen within the body. However, collagen is a protein that, when ingested, is broken down by the digestive system. Results for these types of treatments are inconclusive.
However, as a poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) collagen stimulator, Sculptra Aesthetic is different. It works with your body within the deep dermis, rather than topically, to help revitalize collagen production and help restore your skin’s inner structure and volume. As the Sculptra Aesthetic PLLA microparticles are absorbed, they help stimulate collagen production. Rebuilt collagen strands begin gradually helping to restore facial volume and the look of fullness to wrinkles and folds.
